FACTS
  • Trimper's Rides is a historic landmark in Ocean City
  • Trimper's Rides has been in the same family for more than 100 years - 5 generations have worked in the park
  • Trimper's Rides is threatened with extinction due in large part to staggering increases in property taxes for the massive complex. The revenue Trimper's generates has not kept pace with ever-increasing property tax assessments.
  • The Trimper properties, including properties which solely support Trimper's Rides, face assessment increases that will double property taxes within three years.
  • Within two years, the proposed increase in the tax bill will exceed last year's profit, according to Doug Trimper.
  • In 2002, the average cost of an adult ride was $1.25
  • In 2006, the average cost of an adult ride was $3
  • 38 people are employed year round with 300-350 employed in the summer. Annual salary is $2.6 million.
  • Local and state officials have vowed to work together on some sort of tax relief plan for the property, but it still remains uncertain if this summer could be the last for Trimper's Rides, at least in its current configuration.
  • Doug Trimper has sent letters outlining the problems of the tax assessment to all levels of government and to the media, "We're competing with the government. I wish my problem was competing with Jolly Roger... we're not going out of business because of another amusement park." Doug Trimper has filed an appeal and State officials are currently reviewing the recent assessments.
  • Read the assessment letter from the State Assessent Office.
